Pot Luck and Book Discussion

March 16, 2016 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Time to talk about Being Mortal

Lorain Giles and Lori Souder invite you to participate in discussions about Atul Gawande’s book, Being Mortal. This book is, according to a New York Times book review, Dr. Gawande’s “personal meditation on how we can better live with age-related frailty, serious illness, and approaching death.”

Dr. Gawande examines the current medical practices and societal customs in our culture surrounding dying and death, and leads the reader on a journey through difficult conversations and decision-making—in hospice care, nursing homes, geriatric clinics, and in his own family.

We have scheduled 2 discussions; we welcome you to one or both. And, please come even if you haven’t read the book. The topic is timely for all of us, no matter our age.

First, on March 8, 10:00 a.m., at Loomis Village.

Second, on March 16, 6:00 p.m., at our church. Potluck Supper
(please bring a dish to share),
followed by discussion beginning at 6:45 p.m.

No need to sign up for these discussion opportunities ahead of time. Just come along.

We hope you will join us reading and discussing this book—it’s a great read!

And … We’re hosting a panel discussion April 19th at Mt. Holyoke College around the same issues. Panelists will include College President Lynn Pasquarella (a medical ethicist), our own church member Anita Sarro (a nurse and lawyer), Cooley Dickinson Palliative Care Director Dr. Jeffrey Zesiger, and Dr. M Saleem Bajwa (an internist who has joined us for adult education discussions over the years).
